Pests come in many different shapes and sizes. Some fly, some can jump really high, some look like they came right out of a horror novel. With so many to choose from, it’s hard to know where to begin. So today we thought we would start with two of the classics: ants and rats. These two pests are not only amongst the most common home-invading pests, but they are also two of the most impactful. Let’s dive in and find out what having these pests around your home means for you.
How To Identify Rats
Rats are larger rodents with blunt noses, round ears, and hairless tails. Here in Roseville, there are only two main species of rat invaders: the agile roof rat and the world exploring Norway rat. When inside homes, these two rodents can be identified by the signs they leave behind. Here are a few things we recommend looking for:
Pellets of fecal matter, usually in a group inside cabinets, at the back of drawers, or around pantries.
Holes chewed through baseboards, cardboard food boxes, or other items throughout your home.
Gnawing marks at the base of furniture and around the home.
Grease stains along floorboards.
Ripped up paper or fabric materials.
Aside from the visual cues left by rats, you may also hear them late at night scurrying around in ceiling and wall voids.
How To Identify Ants
Ants come in a few different shapes and sizes, but their general anatomy tends to remain the same: 6 legs, 3 body segments, and 2 bent antennae. Just like rodents, there are only a couple of species of ants that commonly invade homes here in Roseville: the Argentine ant and the odorous house ant. There is also the home destroying carpenter ant, but we won’t be talking about that particular species today.
Problems Rats Cause
Of the two pests discussed today, rats are by far the most problematic. They are filthy and destructive. They carry and transmit a number of diseases that are harmful to humans. Furthermore, armed with sharp front incisor teeth, rats can chew through practically anything, including lead.
Using these teeth, rats will destroy a number of important things throughout homes such as electrical wiring, appliances, utility piping, and even air conditioning. This can lead to flooding and electrical fires within homes.
Finally, rats bring secondary pests into your home such as fleas, ticks, and mites. These tiny parasitic pests are their own vectors for both human and animal diseases.
Problems Ants Cause
Fortunately, ants are not nearly as dangerous or destructive as rats. They do, however, have the capability to spread bacteria on their feet. This can lead to some fairly nasty diseases including Salmonellosis and Staphylococcus. Beyond this, ants are practically harmless. Besides the stench of a crushed odorous house ant, the most trouble you can expect is the annoyance brought on by their incessant scavenging. No one likes finding a line of ants trailing through their kitchen.
Rats and ants are two of the most common pests here in Roseville. If you are interested to learn more about these pesky home invaders, we have everything you need to know.
Why DIY Methods for Rat And Ant Control Fall Short
There are many DIY methods that exist on the internet to deal with rats and ants. Some methods involve the use of natural scents as deterrents, others recommend the use of chemical treatments, both of which have their downsides and shortcomings. With scent deterrents, effectiveness only lasts for a certain amount of time. In most cases, pests grow used to the unpleasant smell to the point where it doesn’t affect them at all.
On the other hand, there are chemical treatments. These we especially don’t recommend as they can be messy and highly toxic. If used improperly and or in the wrong quantities, they can put you, your family, and your pets at risk. This is something we do not want.
